How to split a bill with tip
- Start with the full table subtotal.
- Add sales tax if it isn't included yet.
- Calculate tip on the appropriate base (often pre-tax).
- Divide the grand total by the number of people.
Example: $80 bill, 8% tax ($6.40), 20% tip before tax ($16). Grand total = $102.40. Split four ways = $25.60 each.
Fair splitting tips
- Agree on the tip percentage before dividing.

- Even splits are simplest when orders are roughly similar.

Rounding when amounts do not divide evenly
A total that does not divide cleanly (for example, $100 split between 3 people) is rounded to the nearest cent. Individual shares may differ by one cent so the amounts still add up to the exact total.
